EVENT DETAILS
3rd Annual No Sweat This School Year: Back-to-School Fest
City Sweat Club invites the community to its 3rd Annual Back-to-School Fest and second annual celebration hosted at Durfee Innovation Society.
Saturday, August 22
11:00 AM–2:00 PM
Durfee Innovation Society
2470 Collingwood Street
Detroit, MI 48206
The goal of the day is simple: help take some of the stress out of preparing for a new school year and give families more to look forward to.
Families will have access to backpacks and school supplies at no cost, with supplies collected for students across age groups—from crayons, markers and early-learning essentials for our littlest learners to notebooks, writing supplies and other classroom essentials appropriate for middle and high school students.
Families can also explore the Community Closet, a collection of pre-loved and new clothing shared from one neighbor to another. Items range from infant through adult sizes, allowing youth, parents and caregivers to make selections for the school, work and everyday season ahead—all at no cost.
And this day isn't only for those coming to receive resources. Everyone is invited to come celebrate with us. We want the building and surrounding community filled with neighbors, organizations, families and friends connecting with one another.
Bites + Sips
Food and beverages will be available throughout the celebration while supplies last, including a taste of what's being created through Opportunity Café and City Meals.
Community Conversations
12:00–12:30 PM | Wellness Panel
A community conversation around wellness, access and the different ways we can better care for ourselves and one another.
12:30–1:00 PM | Sustainability Panel
A conversation exploring sustainability, repurposing fashion and the connection between what we wear, how we feel and our larger ecosystem of wellness. Clothing can have a second life—and access to something that allows someone to feel comfortable and confident in how they present themselves can have an impact far beyond what we see on the exterior.
1:30 PM–Close | The Recipe: Open Mic
Walter Lacey, sole MC and founder of The Recipe, will lead an open mic to close out the celebration. Family-friendly artists will share their talent and artwork, with opportunities for members of the community to step up to the mic as well.
Come for the resources. Stay for the conversations, connection and celebration.
No registration or ticket is required. No cost to attend. Register here for alerts: [click here to add to calendar].
Thank you!
how we put support into motion
-
We believe movement can do more.
Every class, run, service project, and community experience is designed to create opportunities for healthier lives and stronger neighborhoods. Through movement, we bring people together, create access to wellness, and help move our city forward.
Café Classes
Movement should be accessible to every body.
Our Café Classes take place Monday through Thursday, with additional Saturday experiences throughout the year. Designed to improve strength, cardiovascular health, mobility, and overall wellness, these classes create opportunities for people of all ages to prioritize their health in a welcoming environment.
More than 70% of City Sweat Club experiences have been offered at no cost to participants. Through our “05” and “06” Programs alone, we've moved 413 people and counting.
Resourceful Reps
Sometimes movement looks like a workout. Sometimes it looks like showing up with a backpack, a coat, a pair of shoes, or a donation for a neighbor.
Through fundraising fitness events, collection drives, and community campaigns, we turn movement into meaningful action and resources for those who need them most.
Our movement isn't just about improving ourselves—it's about showing up for others, too.
-
Healthy communities start with knowledge.
City Meals introduces youth and families to nutrition, healthier food choices, and practical wellness habits through hands-on experiences and education.
By creating opportunities to learn today, we're helping the next generation make informed decisions for tomorrow.
-
Our Community Closets give new life to clothing, shoes, and household essentials by placing them directly into the hands of neighbors who can use them.
Items are collected, sorted, refreshed, and prepared by our volunteers before distribution.
What one family no longer needs can become exactly what another family has been searching for.
